Why should you join a Start-Up?

Startup Working Culture

When I graduated from college, I had two options to start my career with- A conventional entry-level job at a big firm OR a chance to work with a bunch of young and vibrant minds in a cool setup who were toiling hard to get their first major breakthrough. On one hand was job security, good benefits and a well-planned & set way of doing work. On the other hand, was a unique idea and a few people who believed in their idea & were ready to work hard for it. The tendency to always ‘venture in the wilderness’ instead of following conventional ways made me choose the latter one & two years down the line, I am beginning to realise the difference between my personal growth & experience at a start-up (SeedWill Consulting Pvt. Ltd) and my friends’ at bigger firms.

Here are 7 reasons why one should join a start-up early in his/her career!

1) Talent is rewarded-
Talent is always rewarded irrespective of your age, degree or experience. What you do after you’re hired is what matters the most. You get to wear many hats at the same time. On the other hand, bigger firms look for a degree, age, experience and what not. One of my friends working at MNC wasn’t promoted to the next level despite being a top performer simply because that post was not for a 26-year-old.

2) More Collaborative Environment-
At Start-ups, a group of people work together closely and interact through interdependent tasks. In this process, you get to learn a lot more than what your field requires. You get a chance to add more bullet points to your CV.

3) Your voice is heard-
Since there is a smaller workforce, everyone gets equal attention. You are more involved in the decision-making process. You interact directly with the founders. You get the opportunity to present your ideas directly to your management.

4) New & Innovative Ways-
You brainstorm and come up with new ideas for a particular project unlike bigger firms, where there is a fixed way of doing things and teams, may come & go but the procedure remains the same. Even if you come up with a new idea, it gets postponed to be implemented in next quarter and ends up in the garbage bin of board room.

5) You interact with the best minds-
People working in bigger firms rarely see their CEOs or interact with them whereas people working in start-ups interact directly with the brilliant minds who have come up with unique ideas and know how to turn it into a business. You have the opportunity to learn a lot at a very young age just by interacting and observing them working.

6) Job Satisfaction-
You see your work making a measurable impact on the company, often in a short period of time or sometimes, even immediately. When you can track your progress, you know where and how much you are supposed to improve. This is not possible in bigger companies where your work gets consumed by several levels of hierarchy.

Conclusion- The best time to choose to work for a start-up is at the early stage of your career when you are full of energy and high on ambitions. You can juggle a variety of tasks at once, work for long hours & can wear many hats at the same time. You can tap the benefits of start-up culture gaining momentum because of programmes like Digital India & Start-up India, which our previous generations were completely devoid of. Working at

SeedWill Consulting Pvt Ltd has enhanced my personality & helped me hone my skills in an unimaginable way. I would have taken several years to achieve this level of personal growth, had I started my career with an entry-level job at some MNC. Sure, working at start-ups has its own struggles but the perks that it brings along are far greater than those struggles and the sops you get while working at bigger firms.
